As temperatures continue to rise we want to share some tips to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, without overheating! Austin is home to many outdoor activities, whether known or a hidden gem, that will allow you to embrace what it truly means to be an Austonian. From private boat rides on Lake Austin to the best drive-in movie spots around town there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer.
Lake Austin
A great way to get together with friends and family is renting a boat on Lake Austin and enjoying the incredible views it has to offer. Whether it be a sunset couples cruise on a pontoon boat or an adventurous surfing outing on a MasterCraft, there are plenty of companies that can assist you this summer. Many of these companies will allow you to drive yourself with a valid boating license, or you can be accompanied by a captain through all rentals.
Swimming Holes
Ready to make a splash? Visit some of Austin’s greatest swimming holes and our favorite hidden gems. Barton Springs Pool, located within the renowned Zilker Park, is perfect to cool down with water temperatures ranging from 68-70 degrees. The Deep Eddy Pool offers a great atmosphere to lay out in the sun, swim laps, and is within walking distance to one of our favorite burger joints and happy hour destinations, Pool Burger. While these are the two closest swimming holes to downtown Austin, you can enjoy an adventure out to Jacob’s Well in Wimberly, Texas, which is known for its picturesque location and crystal blue waters.
Snow Cones
What better way to cool down than with a flavorful cold treat from some of the local favorites? Littlefields, located in Tarrytown, recently opened SnoRide, a deluxe snow cone experience with plenty of flavors and toppings ranging from nerds to their famous sour blast. Just up the street, a few Austin natives work together to create a family friendly snow cone stand called West Austin Shaved Ice. And not to be missed, a local and long-standing favorite is the famous Snow Beach, located on Barton Springs that offers both walk up and curbside ordering for all ages to enjoy.
Drive-In Movies
Pack up the car and enjoy time with family and friends this summer with a classic drive-in movie theater experience. Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In has created a revamped and modern take on the drive-in movie concept, but continues to show classics for all ages to enjoy. If you wish to make an evening out of it, head east of downtown to the famous Ranger Cattle Drive-In. Starting around 6:30 PM, experience live music, food trucks, cocktails, and other refreshments, followed by a drive-in movie with the great classics on Fridays.
