 15 Tips for Spring Cleaning

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about getting a jumpstart on spring-cleaning. Below are some clever tips and tricks that will leave your house sparkling for spring.

  • To remove water stains from stainless steel fixtures, cut a lemon in half to rub those spots away.
  • Easily remove soap scum from your showerhead by tying a Ziploc bag full of vinegar around it for an hour.
  • To brush away rust stains, simply squeeze a dab of toothpaste on an old toothbrush and scrub away.
  • Mix baking soda, water, one teaspoon of your favorite liquid soap and a few drops of essential oils to create your own personal bathtub cleaner that smells amazing.

  • To prevent those pesky trashcan smells, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom.
  • To clean a sponge, completely wet it, and then put it in the microwave for two minutes. This gets rid of 99% of the bacteria, leaving your handy dishwashing tool fresh and ready to go for spring.
  • Disinfect your garbage disposal by grinding ice cubes made with half water, half vinegar. The ice will sharpen the blades, while the vinegar removes bacteria.
  • Do you have burnt stains on the bottom of your pots? Bring one cup of water and one cup of vinegar to a boil. Once boiling, remove from stovetop and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda. After a few minutes of fizzing, scour as normal and those spots will easily wipe away.

  • Use an old pillowcase to dust your fan blades. Simply place a pillowcase over each blade and pull. The case will catch all of the dust, saving you from additional dusting and vacuuming.
  • To prevent dust and dirt from collecting along baseboards, rub a dryer sheet along them. You won’t have to clean them as often if you do so.

  • Water rings on your hardwoods? Simply hold a blow dryer close to each ring. Within a few minutes, voilà, the ring is gone.
  • Remove scratches on hardwoods by mixing ¼ cup of vinegar and ¾ cup of olive oil. This special concoction will rub those scratches right out.
  • Have you ever thought about cleaning your mattress? If not, you should. Sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and let sit for thirty minutes. Once time is up, simply vacuum it away and your mattress is as fresh as the day you brought it home.

  • Hang all of your clothes with the hangers facing backward. Once you wear something, hang it back up with the hanger facing forward. After one year, donate all of the clothes that are still on a backward hanger.
  • Fold all of your t-shirts with the tops facing down and the spine facing out. That way, you’ll easily be able to grab the shirt you want without making a mess pilfering through the drawer.
